We eventually want to visit every state. While staying in South Dakota to see Mount Rushmore, we were able to take a scenic day trip into Wyoming for the magnificent Devils Tower National Monument. The drive from Deadwood took a little over an hour, through forest, plains and rolling hills.

The towering structure is the centerpiece of its own small village, with surrounding cafes and campsites, gift shops at the entrance, and a welcome center at the base. There are multiple walking paths around Devils Tower - Nikki and I took the relatively easy Tower Trail. This is a 1.8 mile paved pathway around the tower. It starts and ends at the welcome center. It has mild inclines and some stairs, but is very doable for the average traveler. The views of the tower and its surroundings are truly breathtaking.

We went in late September, after the summer crowds. There were other visitors, but we had plenty of space to enjoy nature and each other.

Every good hike should be followed by a good meal. We enjoyed a tasty lunch at The Diamond Bar - just a short ride downhill from the monument. The restaurant is wooden clad with plenty of Wyoming charm, including several different types of animals mounted on the walls. We got a table in view of our recent conquest. Bison never tasted so good.
