Luxembourg - Luxurious, Romantic, Delicious

Luxembourg always sounded magical. Paris, London, Amsterdam came first, as they generally do. But after finally making it to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, we were pleased to find the rumors are true.

We took a scenic train to Luxembourg from Frankfurt, along the Rhine River. A short taxi ride later, we checked in to Le Royal Hotel. This five-star gem is within walking distance to all of the historic charm. A perfect launchpad to explore.

The hotel bar was either a starting or ending point to our magical nights.

Our first date night was Brasserie du Cercle. We are always excited to try local food. They brought us up to the second level. This seemed to be the place for foreigners, and a bit noisy, but it was still lovely. We ordered a bottle of Luxembourgish wine and two local dishes - la gratinée tarte flambée (a light and delicious pizza with potatoes, ham and onions) and feierstengszalot (a type of meat salad - not delicious, but tasty and interesting). The desert was a simple sundae but amazing. What a great night!

The next day we had a delightful lunch at Le Cafe Francais. Not far from the brasserie, off the same lovely square. It sounded touristy, but we actually seemed to be the only Americans. The staff was great, nonetheless. We ordered a cheese plate, the casserole version of the gratinée tarte flambée (I had to get more of those Luxembourgish flavors) and soupe à l'oignon (a perennial favorite). Along with champagne, it was memorable and perfect.

I happen to have a fabulous sweet tooth, so I was ecstatic when we made our way to the Chocolate House of Luxembourg by Nathalie Bonn. This dreamy chocolate house is just across the street from the Grand Ducal Palace. Nikki ordered tea with honey and I ordered one of their famous chocolate spoon drinks (a cup of warm milk with a variety of chocolate spoons which melt in the cup and then melt your soul). I would go back every time (and probably every week if we lived there).

Sadly, we only stayed two nights, so our second and final dinner was at Onesto. This site is in a particularly old / historic part of town and is listed as a UNESCO historic monument. It is actually an Italian pizza restaurant, but I love pizza and Nikki indulged. We got wine and two pizzas. The one I will remember is the namesake Pizza Onesto - tomato sauce, spicy salami, tuna and egg - it sounds so strange, but was so amazing!

Another great aspect of Luxembourg is the outdoors. Every walk we took was a date, a peaceful stroll with stunning architecture, natural beauty, and of course great company. We were there in shoulder season, which was colder but less crowded. We walked across the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, on our way to the Mudam Museum. We walked to the Pont Adolphe and explored the old town. We walked and walked, and had the best time as husband and wife.
