San Francisco for Foodies

Updated: Oct 10

San Francisco is my favorite city in America. The diverse and high quality food offerings are a big part of the reason I am such a fan. Here are a few bites from our most recent visit.

California Fresh

We kicked off our culinary adventure at Octavia. This place highlights local agriculture with a definite California spin. Each plate was beautifully crafted and unique. The atmosphere was quaint in a lovely little neighborhood. Perfect for a date night, I would definitely go back and try their tasting menu.

Levain

Beets

Cacio E Pepe

Creme brulee tart with popcorn ice cream and miso caramel.

Peruvian Chic

I adore Peruvian food. It is not easy to find in Arizona, so I am always on the lookout when we travel. La Mar sits in Pier 1 1/2 with gorgeous views and even better food.

Empanada Flight

Ahi tuna, aji amarillo-ponzu leche de tigre, pickled vegetables, sweet potatoes
Tiradito Nikkei

Taro Chips + Dip. Craveable!

Modern Pinseria

My husband Spencer is a pizza lover above all other foods. On this trip, we happened upon Montesacro. The atmosphere was cozy and warm and we felt like part of an Italian family. Their website describes pinsa as:

The first stateside pinseria, Montesacro offers a modern take on a classic, making the pinsa dough with a blend of rice, soy and wheat flour imported directly from Rome, all GMO-free.

Centocelle

I don't know about all of that, but the dough was incredible and the toppings super fresh. We ended the meal with a small sized pinsa stuffed with pistachio cream. I am always talking smack about the lameness of Italian desserts...I was proved very (happily) wrong in this case.

Burmese Dream

I asked my brother Casey to introduce me to Burmese food at Burma Love. His response? "Oh man I love that place." I heard this sentiment over and over again throughout the course of the weekend. Everyone loves this place, and rightfully so.

The table favorite of the night was the Rainbow Salad. I am still thinking about this plate.

From the website:

This salad has 22 ingredients! Here are some of the ingredients: tofu, fried garlic, fried onions, chickpeas, green papaya, and much more. All mixed with a tamarind vinaigrette dressing.

Rainbow Salad

Luckily, I was with a group of people who were willing to go family style, therefore giving me the opportunity to try as many dishes as possible.

Platha + Dip

Burmese Samusas

The flavors were so complex and each plate was more unique than the last.

Chicken Kebat

Superstar Chicken Fried Rice

It was a memorable night for many reasons. Fantastic company? New food?

Delicious flavors? Special, indeed.

Black Rice Pudding

Platha Dessert

An honorable mention also goes out to the many sourdough bread bowls and soup we ate over the course of four days. Basic? Yes. Tasty and satisfying? Absolutely.

Do you have a favorite food town in the United States?
